Artist's Statement
|
|
|
As an artist, I harvest emotions from personal memories and change the original superficial ‘happening’ into suggestive intimate truths. The creative process is inspired by family patterns repeated over generations, and the drive to break from destructive behavior. Using pattern and repetition to represent the death of autonomy, I fight back with performative mark making to destroy the implied control. I play with contradiction as I create, and simultaneously destroy. I now use it to represent content, rather than just present a concrete image. By using symbols, metaphor, memory and emotion, I want to create works that demonstrate the complexity of relationships and their impact on us as individuals. This becomes a physical and psychic birth-death-rebirth cycle that is crucial in my work. The rebirth portion is to inspire a sense of triumph and well-being within the final result. Taking the hardships of life, and turning them into a source of strength, has always been a part of life. I strive to create something tangible to represent that.
