  What's art all about, anyway?
       by Raffi
There are as many opinions on this subject as there are artists. The truth is that time itself sorts things out but not always. The exceptions are endless. Vincent Van Gogh is a perfect example. He sold only one painting during his tragic life and now billioners buy his works for gigantic sums. Where is the fairness? All of us artists are faced with the same dilemma. No appreciation.

A Brief Book Review: Ross King’s “The Judgment of Paris”
       by Phil Gross
My college art professor was fond of saying “Steal from everyone, there are no art police”. In a sense he was right and in a sense he was wrong, that is regarding ‘art police’. Throughout history, civilizations have enforced their own standards of acceptability in regards to art…sometimes more rigid, sometime less. Now days standards aren’t so rigid and the modern artist enjoys an extraordinary level ......

What medium are you using to paint with? And would you recommend it to others? And Why?
I have experimented with several different mediums. Each have there own positive and negative attributes. Heres what I think so far. 1.Damar cut with a bit turp/turpenoid/ or ecco house turp substitute. I love this to paint with because of how easy it flows and how quickly it dries. Simply dip the paint brush into the medium and then mix your paint. I find I can apply thick or thin brush strokes ......

  The Lament of Artist Representation
Oh to find a gallery owner that is straight forward, says what he or she means, hustles to push your career forward, and pays you fairly in a timely manner. Someone who clearly earns their 50%. Is that too much to ask for? Like an inspiring professor or a trusted mechanic, a reputable art dealer is a person that may take a long time to discover and is truly subject to ones particular needs. Many ......

  Decamp Changes Medium
       by Phil Gross
It's not that my friend Jerry DeCamp was a nationally recognized painter but he was a rising star in the world of expressionist landscape painting. He was blossoming. Prolific intense sessions of focused inspiration would lead to large saturated colored 'Matisse-influenced' Parisian and Mediterranean cityscapes on canvas. Paintings poured forth from this man as he renewed his love for studio art ......

  Not on the Artist's Backs
When did it become the norm to ask artists to donate their works without just monetary compensation to 'fundraisers' for non-profit organizations supposedly devoted to supporting the arts? You can't be supporting the art community on the surface by underpaying artists to keep your own doors open. Surveys of annual salaries always reveal that those in the profession of the fine arts are among America's ......

The Actual Salary of an Artist versus the Perception
I had a show recently of my new oil paintings that went reasonably well. The reviews were wonderful, it was well attended, and sales amounted to approximately $46,000. After the show several people commented to me that I must be rolling in cash and feeling pretty good about it. Rich and famous. If it were only true. The public it seems has a very skewed sense of the monetary realities that challenge ......

Longer Lasting Paints, Brushes and Humans.
Regarding the paint, the brush and the human, here are a few oil painting tips that may prolong the life of all three. Long lasting paint brushes… I have found that to keep brushes in good shape it helps to have a bottle of Vaseline around. When you are ready to close shop for the day the following will help you better preserve your brushes. After cleaning your brush with turpentine, thinner, ......
